Episode 318: Understanding Shared-Decision Making with Dr. Lilyana Amezcua
from RealTalk MS · host Jon Strum and Dr. Lilyana Amezcua
In this episode of RealTalk MS, we're talking about what you should be talking about with your neurologist or MS Specialist. Shared decision-making is a key component of patient-centered health care. It's a process in which clinicians and patients work together to make evidence-based decisions on tests, treatments, and care plans that balance risks and expected outcomes with patient preferences and values. But is shared decision-making actually occurring? Or are people living with MS still being handed a bunch of pamphlets published by different pharmaceutical companies and being asked to read them and let their doc know which disease-modifying therapy they'd like to start? How do we bridge the gap between the promise of shared decision-making and what, for too many people living with MS, is still an unfortunate reality? Dr. Lilyana Amezcua joins me to share her thoughts on how to start the kinds of conversations you should be having with your neurologist or MS specialist. Dr. Amezcua is an Associate Professor of Neurology, a diversity, equity, and inclusion champion, and the fellowship program director at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.
