Welcome to part 1 of episode 34 on the “Love at First Science'' Podcast where Dr. Svenja Borchers speaks into science behind proprioception and how the brain and spinal chord work together to sense the body in space. Do you want to learn more about the important part that proprioception plays for your body and brain? Svenja Borchers is a neuroscientist and yoga teacher who specialized in neuro psychology and object perception. In this podcast she talks about the connection between the brain and movements. She explains what proprioception means and how it is basically our 6th sense. She talks about where the body gets its proprioceptive information from and how the complexity of the wiring is connected to the continuous information exchange. She discusses the roles that proprioception, interoception and our 5 senses play for our brain and how good our brain is at adapting to the demands it is given. She talks about pain perception, the brain maps, and the significance of sensory input. In addition, she shares how proprioception can be improved, which does not only apply to hypermobile people. In her book “Der Yoga Effekt”, she introduces basic functions of neuroscience and how it relates to sensory perception.
