Welcome to the Life's A Pitch Podcast, the show where we pitch the best movies that will never get made. I'm Tom McGraw. And I'm Matt Turner. This is the podcast where we ask you to listen and give us a title of a movie that doesn't exist.

Yet, we then collaborate to create a pitch for that movie, complete with casting, story beats, and sometimes even marketing. Without further ado, this week's main feature is... Hard sci-fi. Hard sci-fi.

Not that soft stuff. No, not... no, no, not gelato of sci-fi. No, we're going for pure wafer.

We go for... We go for... when you let it melt, and then you re-freeze it. Yeah.

And then you let it melt again and then re-freeze it. This sci-fi is gonna be like frozen toffee. Even if you get a scoop that's heated up with boiling water, it's not gonna come through this sci-fi. It's not that nowhere near as soft as that.

No. No. This is the brick wall of sci-fi. Yeah.

You're gonna run straight into it, and then Neil deGrasse Tyson's gonna be on the other... ...going to be behind you, telling you why you failed. Imagine. Imagine having Neil deGrasse Tyson on your set and just going, no.

This would be... this would be bad. You shouldn't be doing this. What if I were to tell you that the moon is very far away?

And it's in a place called Space. Whoa! Neil, you're so smart. I'm so smart.

You're so bloody smart. So hard sci-fi is the sci-fi that's just real hard. It's the one that, like, you know, cater to science nerds. Yeah.

There's no... no, that Star Wars nonsense in this. And not even any Star Trek stuff, where they go in and out. And any Star Trek stuff where they go in and out.

To a kind of energy, a kind of radiation, and a part, and a kind of matter. Yeah. In order to make whatever they want to happen on the screen happen. Yeah.

Now, this is all stuff in the real world that you can use for science fiction, I guess. So, yeah, your moons, your Martians. Yep. You have some episodes of Black Mirror.

Monsters. The Garifed Woods movie before he sold out. Yep. Yeah.

If you wanna watch that, highly recommend. Before he sold out. Yeah. What did he do?

He did Godzilla and then Rogue One. Yeah. Yeah, both. Both that sign out.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, if you like. Every Duncan Jones movie before he sold out. Of course he sold out.

Warcraft. Yeah, same trajectory. Really. Duncan Jones and Garifed Woods.

Also, both of them pretty boring names. Yeah. Just sort of Welsh names. Right.

Yeah. Just Welsh names. So that's what we do in this week. Just does.

Yep. Because we didn't want to put a guest through this. But you do like outside by. I like hard sci-fi.

Putting the guest through this is how I did it. Yeah. It's how I describe the constant back and forth that's gonna happen today. Yeah.

Where Tom will describe a process by which someone tries to get to the moon. Yeah. And I'll be like, oh really? Has it got a tube, the air goes through.

I talked to a potential guest. Yeah. And so do you want to be on the podcast? And she was like, yeah, yeah, that sounds amazing.

I was like, well, the next one we're doing is hard sci-fi. So like I'd advise you to. Yeah, yeah. I don't want you to be on this one.

Because I don't want you to have a bad time. That is the pre-sensing which we're going into this episode. The energy we're bringing into this is that you're gonna have to endure it. Yeah.

You listener are gonna have to endure hard sci-fi. Yeah. Like you asked me for genres, right? Yeah.

Every week or sort of every other week. Yeah. So I got, oh, what genre? I'm running out of genre ideas to put on a poll this week.

Yeah. And I say hard sci-fi and immediately regret it. I love the genre. However, this time, this time you, I asked you and you were like, uh, hard sci-fi?

And I said, it's already on that song. Because it's one that we very rarely do. It's very rarely get selected. Yeah.

Really, very rarely get selected. And it's one I enjoy watching hard sci-fi videos. Yeah. Um, but pitching them and having to make them fun is just, it's a Herculean chore.

Yeah. It's, it's, you've got to try and keep it, keep it relevant to what humanity can do. Yeah. Which isn't that much in the grand scheme of things.

It's really, I just have an alien go like, all we do now. Yeah. Flyin' now. You kind of died of it.

But with a third eye and a green, green skin-tight outfit, and just go, oh, what's going on here? I'm an alien. Oh, and start just throwing stuff around. Well, you can't die now, you can.

You can. You can. Yeah. Nothing's stopping you.

And like, and we did kind of in the, in the Black Mirror episode recently. In a bit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I guess it's very close to the Black Mirror episode.

Um, yeah, I think we should get on pitching some movies. Let's do that. So, uh, people going to such others on our social media, that is Facebook.com forward slash, slash, slash, slash, bitch podcast, and Twitter at Life's a Pitch show, and also patreon.com forward slash slash, slash, slash, slash, as well. We'll get to more on that last one later in the show.

Um, and they gave us titles. On Friday we put- What? They did, yeah, yeah, surprisingly. We put a post out asking for specific hard sci-fi, uh, genre-based titles that don't exist.

So we can pitch them on the show and I'm just going to read some out and we're just going to have a lot of fun with it. And the people oblige. So people oblige. So if you want to get involved in that, follow us on those places and, uh, yeah, get involved.

Okay, so from Terry Silver, we've got staple gun. Staple gun. Yeah. So this is a hard sci-fi movie about what your staple guns were as scary as they sound.

Yeah. They are quite scary. Yeah. Like it's something that can shoot metal bits.

You could get a metal bit in your eye or something. Yeah. And it doesn't hurt if you get hit by them. Mm.

But it's not, it's not a gun gun. Yeah, it's not a gun. And I mean, it is loud. Yeah.

It is loud and sort of like, oh god, what was that? Oh, someone stapling something to a wall. Yeah. I think we do this in a kind of, you know, John Wick gunplay kind of scenario.

Yeah, but it's, but it's, but it's, it's one of these, yeah, one of these weird things, a situation where like someone who knows how to use guns. Yeah. In a world where like all guns are banned, right? Yeah.

In a, in like, let's say the UK, right? Yeah. Right. So there's no guns around, even farmers have had their guns taken off them.

There's no guns whatsoever. Yeah. A group of baddies has gotten hold of some guns and they're coming for this person. Yeah.

John Wick style. Yeah. It's Jessica Chastain. Okay.

Yeah. Yeah. She works a stationery shop. She works in a big chain stationery shop.

Yes. Yeah. I think what happens is the office. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

And I think her boss has got this big shipment of like drugs or something. Oh, right. Yeah. She stumbled accidentally stumbled across a thing.

Yeah. And she's, um, she's, she's only working here because of witness protection. Yes. Right.

Yeah. She was like a big, this isn't a hard sci-fi at all. This is just an action movie. Yeah.

We had kind of visa teasers almost. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

But I like this idea that she, um, she ex-military. It's like black ops. Like firearms experts. Yeah.

And with her is Nick Frost. Okay. Who works there. And he got kicked out of, um, an engineering like doctorate sort of like in, in, in Oxford.

Yeah. Because he kept making like, he was, uh, very much experimenting with a lot of, uh, like, ballistics. Yes. And the tone of the, the political tone of the, of the world is currently anti-war anti-guns.

Yeah. Right. So he got, he got kicked out of that for, for, for, for tinkering too much with that. He's also working in this office.

Yeah. Yeah. And so I think they're drinking after work. Yeah.

In the pub. I think they're drinking, important. Yeah. It doesn't matter.

Yeah. Like they just need to get back to office world after hours. Nick, Nick Frost, I forgot his house keys. Oh, yeah.

Yeah. Cool. So they drunkenly walk into this, into, into this, into this uh, yeah, office. Yeah.

He's like, uh, and she's like, oh yeah, I've got, I've got, I've got, I do actually have, cause, cause, cause the boss didn't want me to, like one, wanted me open up the other day cause you know what? You know what? He never turns up for the shift he says he's on. Yes.

And I always end up opening up. Yeah. So she opens the back door and they find out, oh no big drug deal. Yes.

They see like someone get murdered full on murder in this place and they're just like oh shit. Oh shit We got to get out the doors locked It's like like someone someone watching out for this like big dang Yeah, there's lock the door and just sort of make sure no one can escape kind of like the red wedding kind of thing Yeah, like height of this sort of feud between the guy who runs the office world. Yeah, it's an arms deal in it Yeah, a lot of warehouse space. Yeah, yeah, you know, that's that's why he's there That's what I think what we're teasing here.

Yeah, it's Jessica Jastain who's really good with guns Yeah, and like very resourceful upgrades. Yeah, great some staple guns. Yes He upgrades some staple guns to be like lethal. Yeah, and I think not only staple guns, but just stationary stuff You can find in the stage It's very dangerous and lethal And she's got elastic bands and pent really sharp Yeah, she's a John Wick yeah all the way through like it's like it's like kind of like die hard as well Yeah, police can't get in as well So close the police they they can't get in on the responder to it and like the gang just looks like shutting it down like German like in like in die hard like nothing happening here I'm a German goon who loves guns for no reason It's like like no, we're just having a nice stationary time and at the end Flula bork who is the main boy a guy boss.

Yeah, it's like you're you're pissing around with with your your stupid Staple guns. Yes, you might have stapled my goons to the back of all there But they will live and they will get out of there and then they will use their real guns to shoot you in the face Jessica Jastain, you know what she does she gets a rubber and just rubs him out What and then rubs all the guns out? I was gonna say that he like he she's she's fireload of Right and he's like look I'm very armor-made of thick crate paper You can't possibly affect me. Yeah, it bounces off my gun as well.

Yeah, and then he's like holding the gun up to her Right and he's about to pull the trigger and she says your safety's on and he's like oh, yes This right of course I left my safety on but it must be true and then he hasn't no right and he pulls a trigger Yeah, and it clicks right because one of the staples has gone in where the weather oh She was like safety for me So it's even that yeah, or she throws a safety pin out of that. Yeah Yeah, safety's on yeah, and then she rubs him out And then rubs all the guns out rubs all the evidence away So that when the police turn up there's no evidence and they're just like we're just working late at this office outlet. Yeah at this staples There we go. Hey, this office world There you are staple gun staple gun.

Yeah, I would watch that all right. So from Ross originals We've got Pina collider Pina collider's good. So This is people in certain Switzerland getting real bored And they accidentally not accidentally they fire a coconut a pineapple and some rum yeah, I think so room yeah At each other But none I think maybe yeah, I love how when people think of the super collider they could just chuck anything down there Put a moltiser and Everything yeah, see what happens. Yeah, see if you get a multi's a dog.

Yeah Yeah, it's just part of the summer is in the in the kind of popular consciousness You can blend fly like anything if you do everything at each other fast enough So Sun's really been an happening. Okay, right and it's like and so like Who makes run Captain Morgan? Who's playing them Captain Morgan? Who looks like it was kind of haggard haggard oh Because I was thinking like pirate wise like have you had a bar them or something like that?

Okay? Yeah, I work have you about them. I guess it wouldn't be I would be Pico to see I've got my den right and so yeah, I think So's run out of funding and it's like this whole sort of like get together like we really ran out of money We're trying to find to bring the sponsors in yeah, we're trying to find the big the big stuff What can be I don't think even sponsors at this point right? I think we need a side hustle to get to get more funding Yeah, we're not using the collider at night like we just shut it down like after like 9 p.m.

Yeah, right? What if we go all night? What if we have a party right and Because what we have here is essentially a Like a multi-billion dollar mixer a big yeah a big doughnut shaped mixer a big doughnut shaped cocktail shaker Yeah, if anything if anything if anything at all yeah, that's what we've got so someone Just some random guy like like a certain party animal guy He's always he's always running around campus on a in Hawaiian shirt getting to mix up sunglasses on just sat at the back of his bordering meeting he has a lot of stakes in sir And and it's Ryan Reynolds. Yeah, he's just gone.

Why don't we make a bar? Why make a cocktail bar and use the collider to make the most amazing out of this world cocktails? Mm-hmm, and so they do yeah, they start with the peanut collider. That's what it's called.

That's what it is Yeah, and I think it rips a hole in the atmosphere Yeah, that's the thing it's hard sci-fi so when when he does it when he sneaks in because everyone's like this is a stupid idea Don't do this he sneaks here and does it mmm. He might say to his friends around. Yeah, yeah, yeah I just 20 quid a ticket. Yeah, coconut pineapple.

Yeah, just like pouring rum into this super collider like through a funnel He's like I'm gonna make the best pila collider you ever seen I call it the pina collider then bam Turns out if you put anything else in there, nothing would have happened It would have made a really good cocktail however the the ingredients for pina collider with specifically cat something they put in Captain Morgan's room Yeah James yeah, this is where I have your bottom comes in yeah It's like it's like what we don't know and have about him staggering yeah Captain Martin He's dressed as a pirate, but it's evident that he's not a pirate in that sort of like He's he's kind of gotten in so into his own brand. Yeah, yeah He's very much higher than supply staggering back and forth and we don't realize is that he was a brilliant physicist once yeah Yeah, and he was calling Dr. Morgan at one point he was and into his special blend. Yeah quite below average room Yeah, and he puts He puts taking shots Well across the what across the bow yeah He puts a particle and that's how he found out that this made the rum good enough you know to drink and how he can make it cheap And he was like well guess I guess I'm pivoting my career from a brilliant physicist But the particle he put in there like like he's heard about this idea for a bar because he's still kept in the stern sort of email list And so he staggers from the coast to turn and it's like don't do this you you must not do this No, I think he's down for it.

Yeah, he's basically just drunk. Yeah. Yeah, he comes in He's got his like he's supplying all the rum for this entire movie Yeah, and you know he's like but back in his past. That's the thing about his cat's mama It has the neutrinos in it like it has a particle in it that they weren't expecting yeah It just makes it just makes it taste really good That's why you got inspired from physics.

It just makes it take the average yeah but um so something happens an accident happens in this thing right and What like do they have to shut it down or like the Rimeell's have to sort of I think I think what happens is you know Switzerland? Yeah, I'm not country. I think it tears Switzerland apart. There's the Alps apart.

Yeah, and makes it to the island like So the sea rushes in yeah, and and so the central bit yeah of it Remains use a donut yeah in between the donut bit turned into an island. Yeah, yeah and like floats around and Just it's just it's just there in it. It's just like that the central bit of some become its own little country What this could be because that island can float around. It's now known as the certain party island It's the same right and Reynolds got his way.

It's got a volcano in it Yeah, they turn the volcano tube to send it in different directions It's powered by it's fueled by Captain Morgan's yeah party goes around around the world just sort of like like fire festival Yeah, yeah, yeah, not fire festival some sort of 24 seven three six five Travers traveling the world around going from port to port and I think what we've pitched here Matt is a really sort of long drawn out advert for Captain Morgan's Yeah, this is the advert campaign yeah for Captain Morgan It's like it's like those Chanel adverts that go on for fucking days We don't know what's happening until it's too late and we've watched yeah hours on TV of Captain Morgan like a small drama Yeah, it's like evolution and head and shoulders. Yeah. Yeah, they just turned into a big advert for head and shoulders But in the years like a sleeper. Yeah, I mean did not know that it was a branded thing until he got to the end Yeah, and then for the next six years.

Yeah, there's going to be Captain Morgan's law Yeah Captain Morgan adverts where he's on this island. Yeah, it's heavy up on him and Ryan Reynolds was partying on this island Captain Morgan style We've done a soft launch for the Captain Morgan to the universe. Yes advert universe. Yeah So there's our campaigns that gone for years.

Yeah, the same characters. Yeah, that's that's how it's a man stuff Yes, yeah, brilliant Pina colina a wonderful blend of science fiction and piracy and pineapple. Yes. All right, so from fingers to hand We've got gravity off gravity off.

Yeah, like gravity off or gravity off. Yeah Who's got the best gravity? Oh Maybe another planet turns up that's also inhabited and it's like who's got the best gravity quite high sci-fi it is quite I thought I buy it's not hard enough. No, no, it's not hard enough Maybe it's two scientists are battling it out to control gravity.

That might be more like it Yeah, like one of them table to reverse it Yeah, the one's able to like focus it Yeah, and they like are spending time because there's not enough funding for the for sign look for both for both So they're really they're having to sort of battle against each other to get funding. Yeah. Yeah, but like by pulling pranks Yes, sneaking into the vents of each other's and like turning on devices that just make everything stick to the wall Yeah, or like, you know that they're just out in the park. Yeah, and then their shoes they planted It's a fast like a little like a kids a kid sci-fi movie.

Yeah, where like You know one set of practice is like he shows me into the souls of the shoes You know the wood they rub a bit yeah, I just like these little plates and because he's figured out reverse gravity It's just flips him into the sky. It's kind of like the basketball game in Flubber. Yeah, yeah, I like that You remember that movie I do remember that movie barely yeah, we've run really was a stuccoload of Flubber Elastic bits and they're bouncing all over the place exactly. Yeah, yeah And the ref doesn't know what to do and and that's the first third of the movie Yeah, right is them basically with these ideas we introduced the idea of these really smart scientists Yeah, but I went out for funding.

Yeah, yeah to get the prize. They want to get the prize Oh, Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe. Yeah, yeah, and they both want the prize Yeah, the big science prize if you can't get the big science prize You don't get funding for you. You're gonna if yeah That's what it's called.

There's the Nobel Prize for physics and stuff like that What people really want is something called the big science prize prize for fun things. Yeah And you're gonna be a big scientist big important scientist if you get it if you don't they throw you in a bin Well that lady did with that cat one time. Yeah, it's the same lady We get the lady yeah, and you've got a stand on that on that wall Yeah, she just drags you into the bin. Yeah, and then and then after filming we send her back to jail.

Yes She belongs Of course we do but Yeah, so anyway, I think we did have that fast and then eventually like a shady group of criminals gets involved because they're like they see the The big prank the one of them pulls and it's like we could use that to get into banks banks and stuff So they try and this Batman villain the 60s Batman Dr. Gravity I could be Dr. Gravity if I wanted to Of course, it's me Willem de Faux. I choose I choose my project incredibly scrupulously He doesn't have any science science knowledge.

He just he just an evil genius. Yeah, well not an evil Just an evil guy. No, that was me Willem de Faux the actor. Okay, I was talking about me choosing my products They're projecting incredibly scrupulous.

Okay, right. Yeah, I'm very picky about which films I'm on and gravity off is one Is really sure that he thought I would push the bounds. Yeah Because Robert Eggers is directing because the director of the vivitch the vivitch lighthouse was gonna be doing it and the North man Yeah, yeah, he's next film gravity off gravity Starring Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe as opposing science prank I'd always look forward to the chance to work with with Rupert Grint Not Daniel Radcliffe. I like I like the fact that he he was willing to take all the acting and and that That ice cream vane he bought great screwball.

Yeah Yeah, and then that one episode of again with El Toro's cabin of curiosity was pretty good as well I when I bought the screwball I thought I was getting the cocktail and I delight it was ice cream But with a little bit of bubble gum in the bottom a little ball of bubble gum at the bottom. Yeah, it's a little plastic comb Yeah, it was it was delicious. It wasn't recyclable though. I was disappointed to find out So what will the phone is me?

Yeah, right? He's he's he's the Batman esque villain. Yeah, he's a mobster And he's willing to like you know, he's found out about these two scientists and he's willing to extort or Endanger everyone in their lives In order to make them join his his like tool up his team with their tech, right? So he's kidnapped their mums.

Oh, no, so they've got to come together. Yeah to turn gravity on and off And use that superpower. He's no they've he's kidnapped their science teacher because they're like they're like teens Yeah, in this he's getting at their science teacher who's played by Helen Mirren. Okay, all right And she's been kidnapped.

Yeah, and when they eventually get when they eventually break into a compound which will happen in that Yeah, when they eventually break into his compound to try and rescue Helen Mirren. Yeah, they will discover that she's already broken out Mmm, and that she's stolen all the gold in Fort Knox She was the real villain. She was good. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, not that will under phone.

No, no But she she did it but I quite like the arc of like these two guys pranking out Yeah, get to know what they've created gravity on gravity off guns that they've got in 10 to 5 gravity over here in 10 to 5 yes with these things that they do and They kind of do in the Ironman films. Yeah in the first two specifically Ironman does something in like the first sort of in the middle of the second act that comes back to defeat the villain. Yeah Um, so in the first one it's the icing problem. Yeah, he nearly dies because he goes too high.

Yes frozen And then he's like yeah, so the icing problem Yeah in the second one is when he's fighting with war machine and they do a big explosion when they're when their lasers meet And they do that to kill whiplash. Yeah, it's kind of like this where they do something and they're like whoa Whoa, we should stop fighting. Yeah, or like that was incredible Yeah, and then all like that because obviously this this evil genius man Wonderful has got these things but he's not got the upgrade a version that doesn't stop this thing Yeah, yeah, and then they that's how they get in Yeah, they do a thing where they accidentally suspend gravity everywhere within a square half mile. Yes So like everything starts floating gently yeah gently gently gently upwards and everyone's got to sort of like grab it and start Tight, but not indefinitely.

So they only go like six feet off the ground. Yeah, it's kind of like you know The the planes that go up and down to generate anti-gravity exactly. It's kind of just like that all over the place So what they do is they know that like they're in an area of like they're in this warehouse Yeah, where we're going to go stashing all this gold from four knocks. Yeah, right They are down amongst these big tall boxes a little bit like um, uh what it calls, uh, india and jones in the end.

Oh, yeah, yeah, area 51 as we found out in the fourth one. He's up on this big balcony. Yeah, right? and uh like he's he's very much kind of let's say he's uh He's up there and he's like he's gonna shoot him right, but they hide like underneath the balcony Yeah, so he starts jumping down like coming down that coming down a ladder at which point They do the thing where it just suspends all the gravity and because he can't grip onto the onto the ladder They're able to kick themselves towards all this Uh, this like to the exit or something.

Yeah, um, or like, you know tie him to the ladder or whatever they want to do Um But he's got no purchase on anything so like because he's floating essentially in mid-air as he sort of jumps down off this balcony He's just got he's just floating upside down. Yeah in that moment That's when Helen mirroring comes out. They're like, okay, now quickly open the door to let our science teacher Helen mirroring out At which point she comes out of the vent yeah kicking off and then just kicks one of the big boxes of gold bullion Towards the door. I just just zooms out of the window with a big box of gold bullion Oh, yes Because she was just taking her opportunity because she knew that she was gonna be like she wasn't being paid enough in her like, you know Government funded teaching job.

So she's just like i'm gonna retire. I'm taking like a i'm taking a full 50th of the gold bullion in Fort Knox Gets out the window and then we cut to them in Hawaii just hanging out hanging out. Yeah playing around with gravity in Hawaii. Yeah, exactly Yeah, oh, how do you play around with gravity?

Oh surfing? Yes. Yeah, you start creating weird like shaped waves When they do like spirals and stuff yeah gravity is attached to the bottom of the board. They have an obsession with surfing as well Yeah, they're too so bro.

It's very well. No, it's they never they've never been cool enough to surf. Okay, too busy science thing They get out on the waves at school and all the all the popular kids are making fun of us like you can't surf You don't you don't ride the waves like we do. Yeah, and then they show off at the end in Hawaii Because it's like the moon you know the moon controls the tires and they know that they've got one attached to the bottom of the board so the waves are following the board Oh, yeah, essentially like hoverboarding around the waves are constantly keeping them sport.

I like it. You got the Hawaii 5-0 Soundtrack to run the credits to do do do do do do and it's just footage of Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint surfing together off into the sunset. Yeah. Yeah.

There we go Gravity off So those are all our film pictures this week. Thank you everyone who got in touch of us on our social media Remember that is Facebook.com forward slash life switch podcast twitter at life to pitch show and patreon.com forward slash life switch podcast If you want to give us titles we post out a post on Friday with the genre we're doing that week So if you want to get involved if you've not listened before and you want to get involved Then get on that because we always love new people coming in and giving us titles man those Those hard sci-fi movies were hard to do. Oh, yeah, it was so hard. We were we had to consult with a lot of scientific advisors on those Yeah, yeah, there was one here the whole time.

Yeah, we ignored them You can't hear them because we didn't give them a microphone. Yeah. Yeah. They were constantly shouting notes that as the whole way through the soundproof First big scream you put them behind.

Yeah, you hear that? Yeah. Yeah, we had your mute the whole time Yeah, but some people we don't have our mute other people who like to share the podcast you're allowed everyone to speak your mind about the podcast To your friends. Thank you for doing it.
