Episode 5: Quality of Life, Frailty, and Acute Stress in Burn Patients

First part of Episode 5 of the JBCR podcast summarizes three articles by Digital Media Editor, Dr. Joshua Carson. Articles covering the effect of frailty on mortality in patient population of 50 years and older, quality of life and barriers to support for burn survivors such as awareness of the existence of support programs and accessibility of these programs in rural areas, and finally the effect of mobilizing a skin graft patient early on as opposed to prolonged bedrest are summarized. On the second part of the podcast, Dr. Carson interviews two experts in the fields of PTSD and ASD. Dr. Walter Meyer, III and Dr. Nikhil Rao talk about the team approaches currently used in identifying psychological and acute stress effects burn patients and their families experience. In addition to physical injuries, pain level coupled with trauma brings challenges in evaluation. The doctors discuss various medication and cognitive behavioral treatments along with timelines of implementation for increased effectiveness.
