Four of the articles were developed from 2019 annual meeting abstract/posters, including a study on skin graft border scars which highlights an important focuses of burn care surgeons. Dr Carson also highlights a study from University of Kansas Medical Center as they looked at the effects of intraoperative steroids and potential complications post-surgery.     In the JBCR podcast for the 2019 4th issue, Digital Media Editor Dr. Katie Romanowski highlights a few articles from the July/August issue. The two articles featured focus on oxandrolone and the development of transaminitis and determining if pediatric burns are accidental or abusive. Dr. Romanowski then interviews Ingrid Parry, MS, PT about her multicenter study that is featured in this issue, “Goniometric Measurement of Burn Scar Contracture: A Paradigm Shift Challenging the Standard.” They discuss how the new measurement was developed, the importance of its development and its impact on burn survivors.

    Episode 5: Quality of Life, Frailty, and Acute Stress in Burn Patients

    First part of Episode 5 of the JBCR podcast summarizes three articles by Digital Media Editor, Dr. Joshua Carson. Articles covering the effect of frailty on mortality in patient population of 50 years and older, quality of life and barriers to support for burn survivors such as awareness of the existence of support programs and accessibility of these programs in rural areas, and finally the effect of mobilizing a skin graft patient early on as opposed to prolonged bedrest are summarized. On the second part of the podcast, Dr. Carson interviews two experts in the fields of PTSD and ASD. Dr. Walter Meyer, III and Dr. Nikhil Rao talk about the team approaches currently used in identifying psychological and acute stress effects burn patients and their families experience. In addition to physical injuries, pain level coupled with trauma brings challenges in evaluation. The doctors discuss various medication and cognitive behavioral treatments along with timelines of implementation for increased effectiveness.

    In this episode of the JBCR podcast, Digital Media Editor Dr. Katie Romanowski highlights four articles from the July/August issue. She begins by summarizing articles on the ability of pre-burn center providers to accurately predict percent total body surface area burned, the use of a silver nylon dressing for the transport of injured combat casualties, and the appropriate use of air ambulance services at a regional burn center. Dr. Romanowski then interviews Drs. Julie Rizzo, Kevin Chung, and Kaitlin Pruskowski about their group’s article from this issue, ͞A survey of temperature management practices among burn centers in North America.͟ They discuss some details of the paper as well as the importance of temperature management in burn patients and how to move forward with their research into how temperature is maintained in burn patients.

    Drs. Blome-Eberwein and Branski join the Burncast to discuss the state of the art of burn reconstruction and scar therapy. They share their experience teaching 2 popular courses at the meeting— a review of burn reconstruction and an introduction to laser therapy for burns. They then discuss their clinical trials centering on the treatment of partial-thickness burns with Suprathel®, a synthetic wound coverage therapy newly available in the US. Dr. Blome-Eberwein also talks about her randomized control trial of CO2 laser fractional scar ablation with and without topical corticosteroids. Finally, Drs. Blome-Eberwein and Branski offer some thoughts on the need for more developed practice guidelines and training standards for postburn reconstruction.
