Episode 9 - Step 5 - Emergency Protocol
from 12S4E: The 12 Steps for Everyone
In this episode, Denise and Jackie discuss Step 5: “With vulnerability and integrity, we share this inventory with someone safe and trustworthy.” They share how to prepare for opening up about the list of fears, shames, and resentments that come up during Step 4. In the traditional 12 Step model, a sponsee typically starts the fifth step by sharing their stories with their sponsor. In the 12 Steps for Everyone framework, Denise and Jackie believe this step can take shape with anyone who can hold space and maintain confidentiality. Jackie mentions that a therapist or close friend are good places to start. The key with Step 5 is to find a safe person and location. In Denise’s experience, most people get through Step 5 feeling relieved and have a new perspective on the context of their behaviors, addiction, and mental illness. Jackie explains what’s holding her back from doing Step 5, including the new level of accountability that comes with it. In their conversation, Denise suggests different ways to embark on the inventory and sharing process.
