Episode 99: Six Kidney Transplants: Darren’s Remarkable Kidney Disease Journey | Part 2

from Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast | Living with Kidney Disease · host Dee Moore

What does it take to keep going after repeated kidney transplant failure, dialysis complications and five kidney transplants? In Part 2, Dee Moore continues her conversation with chef Darren Ferguson, who shares the extraordinary final chapters of his kidney disease journey — including haemodialysis, living kidney donation, paired kidney exchange and ultimately receiving his sixth kidney transplant. Darren reflects on receiving his fourth transplant, returning to dialysis after transplant failure and the incredible gift of a fifth kidney from a close friend. That living donor kidney gave him approximately 11 years away from dialysis before eventually failing. After being told another transplant might not be possible, Darren was given another chance through the paired kidney exchange programme. He describes the complex journey to his sixth kidney transplant, a marathon transplant operation and the life-threatening complications that followed. Darren also speaks candidly about the emotional impact of transplant failure, the guilt he experienced after losing a living donor kidney, the importance of support and how he finally achieved his lifelong ambition of becoming a chef. 🎧 In this episode: • Kidney transplant failure and returning to dialysis • Haemodialysis and dialysis access complications • Living kidney donation • Receiving a fifth kidney transplant • Coping with guilt and transplant loss • Paired kidney exchange • Receiving a sixth kidney transplant • Life-threatening post-transplant complications • Life after transplantation and pursuing your dreams 💚 If Darren’s story resonates with you, share this episode with someone who may benefit from hearing it.
