And David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of every man grieved for his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God. — 1 Samuel 30:6When David's own men talked of stoning him, he 'encouraged himself in the Lord his God'. He didn't look inward or downward—he looked up. That's what faith does when circumstances scream the opposite. Peter, when many disciples turned back, said, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life'. Paul knew whom he had believed and was persuaded of his keeping power. The psalms are full of this pattern—crying out, then remembering, then praising. It's not mindless optimism; it's deliberate trust in a covenant-keeping God.
