Exodus 9
from The Readings
Exodus 9 read aloud, in a fresh direct translation from the Hebrew — plain modern English, nothing added. Translator's notes: • Exodus 9:6 — כֹּל מִקְנֵה מִצְרַיִם (kol miqneh Mitzrayim): chose "all Egypt's livestock". Alternatives: "all the livestock in the field", understood from verse 3. Why: the verse as written says all, even though later verses speak of Egyptian livestock again; the rendering keeps the word as written and leaves the tension on the page. • Exodus 9:15 — שָׁלַחְתִּי אֶת־יָדִי וָאַךְ (shalachti et-yadi va'akh): chose "I could have stretched out my hand and struck". Alternatives: "I have already stretched out my hand and struck". Why: the sentence reads as an unreal condition — what could have happened by now — set against the reason Pharaoh was let stand in the next verse. • Exodus 9:28 — קֹלֹת אֱלֹהִים (qolot Elohim): chose "Elohim's thunder". Alternatives: "mighty thunder", "the thunder of God". Why: qolot is literally voices or sounds, used here for thunder; Elohim is kept as Elohim under the standing rule, so the phrase is carried as thunder belonging to Elohim.
