Fallen Idols and Extravagant Worship: 1 Samuel 5–7 and John 11–12 (Day 140)

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

What happens when the presence of God invades our spaces? Today in 1 Samuel, the Philistines discover that capturing the Ark of the Covenant is a terrifying curse, not a victory. From the temple of Dagon to the streets of pagan cities, God establishes His unshared authority, forcing the Philistines to return the Ark on a driverless cart. In the Gospel of John, the resurrection of Lazarus sparks two opposing reactions. While the religious elite cynically plot to murder Jesus to preserve their political power, Mary of Bethany responds with beautiful, costly devotion, pouring out an inheritance worth a year’s wages to anoint the feet of her King.Today’s Scripture:📖 1 Samuel 5–7 – The captured Ark is placed in the temple of the idol Dagon, only for the statue to be found face-down and shattered. Plagues break out across Philistia until they return the Ark to Israel on a new cart pulled by milk cows. Later, Samuel calls Israel to put away their foreign gods at Mizpah, leading to a massive victory over the Philistines and the setting up of the Ebenezer stone—the stone of help.📖 John 11:45–12:11 – The Sanhedrin panics over Jesus' popularity, and Caiaphas unwittingly prophesies that Jesus must die for the nation. Six days before Passover, Jesus dines with Lazarus. Mary opens an expensive jar of pure nard to anoint Jesus' feet, drawing sharp criticism from Judas Iscariot, while the chief priests decide they must kill Lazarus too because his story is convincing so many to believe.📖 Proverbs 12:18–27 – Solomon contrasts the impact of our words and work ethic: "There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." He adds that "anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad."RESOURCES & READ-ALONG📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT📧 Questions?
