白居易的七律《放言五首》，是一组政治抒情诗。公元815年（唐宪宗元和十年），白居易因为请朝廷追捕刺杀宰相武元衡的凶手，遭到当权者的忌恨，被贬为江州司马。这是他被贬到江州途中写的诗。“放言”，就是无所顾忌，畅所欲言，有对当时朝政的不满，也有对自己的遭遇感到忿忿。
