Millar's team mate Julian Dean would narrowly miss out on the win, closing rapidly in the final but finishing second to Lampre's Alessandro Petacchi. The win was Petacchi's second of only 2 stage victories that year which would help him to winning the overall points classification, despite HTC Columbia’s Mark Cavendish winning 5.
