When is a race not a race? When the GC lead decides he doesn’t fancy it? Gary’s apathy towards the current Maglia Rosa might be taking a turn for the worse, but how does the sport balance spectacle and safety? Still, over the Mediterranean in Burgos, the Women’s World Tour continues to serve up Actual Racing and new winners and it all bodes well for the Giro d’Italia Women which rolls out next weekend. The team look ahead to this, a sprinter-unfriendly final week of the men’s Giro and also take delight in the SRAM v UCI legal case being settled in favour of the kids rather than the man.📸 The greatest winning margin in Giro d'Italia history occurred in the 1914 edition, when Italian Alfonso Calzolari (pictured) defeated his compatriot Pierino Albini by 1 hour, 55 minutes, and 26 seconds. Of course, given that the average length of each of that edition’s 8 stages was almost 400km, then perhaps such a time gap is surprising but not shocking. Tadej Pogacar’s 9:56 margin over Dani Martinez in 2024 remains the greatest margin in more recent times, although that is still closer than Vittorio Adorni’s 11:26 over Italo Zilioli in 1965 or the 1954 battle between Swiss riders Hugo Koblet and Carlo Clerici which saw Koblet trail home over 24 minutes behind his victorious compatriot .
