Filled with Glory and Chased by Envy: The Temple Dedicated & The Mission Opposed (Day 171)
from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell
What happens when the undeniable reality of God confronts the hearts of men? Today on Day 171, we step into a grand moment of sacred fulfillment alongside the fierce realities of spiritual warfare on the mission field. In 1 Kings, the construction of the Temple is finally complete. We watch the priests carry the Ark of the Covenant into the dark, gold-lined Holy of Holies. The moment they step back, a thick cloud of the Lord’s glory floods the room so intensely that the priests cannot even stand to minister—God has officially moved into His house. In the book of Acts, we watch the explosive impact of that same divine presence moving through the apostles. In Antioch and Iconium, almost the entire city gathers to hear Paul and Barnabas preach. But where God works, opposition stirs. Driven by intense jealousy, the religious elite spark a wave of persecution, forcing the apostles to shake the dust from their feet and carry the fire of the gospel to the next town.Today’s Scripture:📖 1 Kings 7:23–8:21 – Huram finishes casting the massive bronze furnishings, including the "Sea" (a colossal basin resting on twelve bronze oxen) and the mobile sacrificial carts. In chapter 8, Solomon assembles the elders of Israel to bring the Ark up from the City of David. When the priests place the Ark beneath the wings of the cherubim, the cloud of the Lord’s glory fills the Temple. Solomon blesses the assembly, praising God for fulfilling the ancient promise He made to David.📖 Acts 13:42–14:7 – The people beg Paul and Barnabas to speak more the following Sabbath, drawing nearly the whole city. Filled with jealousy, the Jewish leaders revile them, prompting Paul to declare that since they reject eternal life, the apostles will turn directly to the Gentiles. The Gentiles rejoice, but a persecution forces Paul and Barnabas to shake the dust off their feet and flee to Iconium. Filled with joy and the Holy Spirit, they preach boldly in Iconium until a violent plot forces them to flee again to Lystra and Derbe.📖 Psalm 76:1–12 – A majestic song of victory celebrating God as the ultimate, fearsome judge: "Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?" The psalmist declares that the wrath of man will ultimately praise God, who cuts off the spirit of princes.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT📧 Questions?
