Financial literacy, being known for getting things done and the power of compound interest with Kevin McCarthy

from EdUp Canada · host EdUp Canada

Just like with your finances, the power of compounding is huge. And one can never underestimate how 'getting things done' is as a skill set. To talk about financial literacy, and being known for 'getting things done' we have Kevin McCarthy, Head, Corporations and Institutions at Enriched Academy. Kevin brings over 20 years of public policy and financial sector experience to Enriched Academy and a deep passion for helping people understand the basics of personal finance. Kevin runs the Education Division at Enriched Academy, helping students across the country learn the essential skill of managing their money. Starting as early as Grade 9, when his grandfather bought him a copy of The Wealthy Barber, Kevin has been interested in financial education and the critical role it plays in our lives. While working in Ottawa, Kevin was responsible for the financial literacy file for Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and helped launch the federal government’s Financial Literacy Panel. Kevin played a key role in the development and naming of the Tax-Free Savings Account, the single most important personal savings vehicle since the introduction of the Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). Prior to joining Enriched in 2018, Kevin worked at Scotiabank in several roles, including leading its government affairs team, as well as in investor relations, commercial banking and helping manage the bank’s student strategy. Before joining the private sector, Kevin worked for more than 10 years in government, serving as an advisor to an Ontario Premier and to a provincial and federal Minister of Finance. For eight of those years, he served as the Director of Policy and Chief of Staff to Canada’s Finance Minister. Kevin played a central role in all significant financial challenges the Government of Canada managed from 2006 to 2013, including the financial crisis of 2008-2009 and the design and implementation of eight federal budgets. He also served as a senior advisor to Canada’s Prime Minister and Finance Minister in countless international forums, including the G20, G7 and APEC, focused on global trade and financial challenges. Kevin has a BA (Hons.) from Queen’s University and received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal for his work in public policy related to the creation of the Tax-Free Savings Account. Kevin lives in Burlington, Ontario, with his wife and three children.
