Finding Yourself Beneath the Mask
from Still Alchemy · host Still Alchemy
Who are you when no one is watching? It sounds like a simple question, but answering it honestly can take a lifetime. From the moment we are born, layers of identity begin forming around us. Our parents give us a name. Our families teach us traditions and expectations. Our culture, religion, friends, and communities influence what we believe, how we behave, and what we think success should look like. Over time, we can become so comfortable wearing the identity others helped create for us that we forget to ask a deeper question: Who am I underneath the mask? We are not our resumes. We are not our bank accounts. We are not the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, or the titles attached to our names. Those things may describe our lives, but they do not define our deepest identity. Many of us spend years trying to appear smart, successful, financially stable, attractive, confident, or accomplished. We learn to present the version of ourselves we believe others will admire. Yet underneath that image may be someone who simply wants to be loved, understood, accepted, and free to live authentically. So how do we peel back the layers? 1. Question what you believe. Look at the beliefs you inherited from your family, culture, religion, and environment. Ask yourself: Do I truly believe this, or was I simply taught to believe it? You don't have to reject your upbringing. You simply need to discover which beliefs are genuinely yours. 2. Separate your desires from other people's expectations. Ask yourself: If nobody could judge or criticize me, how would I live my life? This can reveal whether your choices are coming from your heart or from the need to make others proud. 3. Pay attention to what makes you feel alive. Notice what excites you, what brings you peace, what makes you curious, and what causes you to lose track of time. These experiences can provide clues about your authentic self. 4. Make space for silence. We live surrounded by noise and opinions. Spend time alone without social media, entertainment, or outside influence. Journaling, meditation, walking, or simply sitting quietly can help you hear your own voice. 5. Examine your fears and regrets with compassion. Sometimes our masks are created to protect us. We may avoid love because we fear rejection or pursue success because we fear being insignificant. Instead of judging yourself, ask: What is this part of me trying to protect? Perhaps discovering who we are isn't about becoming someone new. Perhaps it is about removing everything that isn't truly us. Underneath our accomplishments, possessions, labels, and expectations, we may discover something universal. We all experience love, loss, fear, hope, joy, and pain. Our stories may be different, but our humanity connects us. Maybe the goal isn't to become someone extraordinary. Maybe it is simply to become honest enough to finally be yourself.
