Fixed And Growth Mindset
from The Health and Sport Show
Expanding on the fourth of the 4 pillars discussed in the previous episode, mindset, Tom details a subject first introduced to him by Neil Banfield, at the time head of Arsenal Youth Academy and now First Team coach at Queens Park Rangers and Tony Strudwick, former head of performance at Manchester United and now head of sport science and medicine at Arsenal. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tom was pointed toward the mindset work of Carol Dweck an American psychologist. While testing a group of children with a challenge outside of their normal comfort zone in which most were expected to fail a significant number expressed pleasure in this new task and requested more challenges of this kind. This group were labelled the ‘growth’ mindset. Another grouping amongst these children found their inability to complete the task as an undermining failure. When questioned later how they would deal with it responded ‘next time I’ll cheat’ or ‘I’ll bring someone worse than me so I look better.’ This group, as challenge avoiders, were called ‘fixed’ mindset. To change from fixed to growth you must grasp the idea that an inability to perform a task is nearly the start of the journey to learning to be proficient in that task. The mind can be supplied with new skills constantly and consistently. Being a novice or beginner is expected. No one avoids this phase so forgiving of your early missteps and failures. See any challenge outside your comfort zone as an exciting opportunity to grow. Utilise the word “yet” at any failures you encounter. You haven’t succeeded “yet”. Value feedback for its learning opportunity, not criticism. Accept the need for focus and purpose in your learning process. The result is always secondary to the effort you apply to your learning. BEST MOMENTS ‘Some children really embraced the challenge and enjoyed the fact that these problems took them outside of their comfort zone.’ ‘That of course means there is no possibility that person can improve. The fixed mindset see now as forever.’ ‘There is one little three letter word that has the ability to flip someone from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset and that word is “yet”’ ‘See the brain as like a muscle, we can teach it new things. You can teach an old dog new tricks if it wants to learn new tricks.’ ‘“Exciting” and “fearful” are two different sides of the same coin, in my opinion.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://youtube.com/channel/UCQXAka99a6MdZexeEJaMZbAhttps://m.facebook.com/elevatehealthuk/https://www.elevatehealthuk.com/https://instagram.com/elevate_healthuk?utm_medium=copy_linkhttps://www.matthewsyed.co.uk/resource/bounce-the-myth-of-talent-and-the-power-of-practice/http://danielcoyle.com/the-talent-code/ Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell ABOUT THE HOST TOM BUTTERFIELD I have always been interested in sports, unfortunately injuries and poor training decisions curtailed my dream of becoming a professional football player.
