Ethylenoxid… vermutlich bis du diesem Begriff noch nie in deinem Leben begegnet. Und das hat auch seinen Grund. Es handelt sich dabei um ein hochgradig giftiges und krebserregendes Gas, das es bereits seit den 1930er Jahren gibt. Es ist ein besonders vielseitiges Gas, weshalb es auch auf unterschiedlichen Gebieten zum Einsatz kommt. In der Medizin wird es eingesetzt zur Sterilisation von bspw. Einwegprodukten wie Verbandsmaterial, Spritzen und Kathedern. Im militärischen Bereich wir es als Brennstoff für Streubomben eingesetzt und als Pestizid und Biozid wird es eingesetzt um Bakterien, Viren und Pilze auf Lebensmitteln abzutöten. In Deutschland ist der Einsatz von Ethylenoxid in vielen Lebensbereichen längst verboten. Warum findet es sich also immer wieder in unseren Lebensmitteln?
