Former (TRC) Commissioner; Yasmin Sooka: “ The State has casually treated the families of victims of apartheid- era crimes”

Counsel on behalf of the families and survivors of apartheid-era gross human rights violations argue that his clients cannot be expected to put their case on hold pending the outcome of the Commission of Inquiry tasked with probing whether there was any political interference in the prosecution of TRC Cases. This is in response to President Ramaphosa's bid - before the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria - for a stay of the constitutional damages case against them. The damages case, launched in January this year, seeks to have government's conduct in obstructing the investigation or prosecution of apartheid-era cases referred by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to the National Prosecuting Authority declared unlawful and in violation of the applicants' human rights.
