Free Speech, Retaliation, and the Cost of Integrity: The Story of Fire Chief Erik Holt  This story began in April 2022, Erik Holt left federal service at Ft. Carson, CO, after 18 years to raise his daughters and accepted the Fire Chief position at a small rural department in Colorado. Within a year, with the support of an outstanding board and dedicated personnel, he and his staff transformed the fire department from 5 to over 60 trained, qualified, and dedicated personnel.  Then came the May 2023 election. For the first time, all five board seats were up for election. Chief Holt received complaints from citizens regarding irregularities at the polls. He personally sat down and reviewed 48 hours of surveillance footage and discovered clear evidence of coordinated election misconduct. I Chief Holt asked himself the four questions we always talk about on the WSL Podcast: what is the right thing to do, when to do it, how to doit and what are the reasons for doing it? He followed his legal and moral obligation and reported the findings to the District Attorney’s office. That decision changed everything.
