The picture many of us carry of poverty is an urban one. Hamilton County tells a different story. Despite being one of Indiana’s most prosperous counties, Hamilton County has 34,764 households living below the United Way’s ALICE threshold. These are often working families whose incomes simply cannot keep pace with the local cost of housing, child care, food, transportation and health care. Larry Lannan discusses this hidden suburban hardship with MaryEdith Malin, executive director of Hamilton County Kids Coats. The organization provides free winter coats and winter wear to more than 3,000 local children each year. Larry also shares commentaries on Peggy Wallace’s book and an unusual story about Mozart.
