Fridays With Larry - July 3, 2026
his week on Fridays With Larry: the story of Angela Allen, a local newspaper reporter in rural Sullivan County, southwest Indiana. When a large firm bought her paper, Angela lost her reporting job — until public demand brought her back part-time to keep covering the community. She says she later lost her full-time job due to political pressure on her employer, leaving her unable to make ends meet on part-time reporting income alone. It's a story about the cost of local journalism, the power of a community that refuses to lose its voice, and one reporter's determination to keep telling the truth. Fridays With Larry - June 26, 2026
Artificial intelligence, Indiana utility policy, and helping seniors remain independent are all part of this week's Fridays with Larry. I begin this episode with commentary on the technology industry's response to the federal government's decision to pull back the Mythos and Fable5 AI programs and what that could mean for the future of artificial intelligence. I also take a look at recent developments in Indiana's regulation of electric utility rates and explain why the issue matters to consumers throughout the state. My guest is Stacey Williams, owner of Seniors Helping Seniors. She discusses how her organization helps older adults remain in their own homes by matching them with fellow seniors who provide companionship and assistance. We talk about the growing need for in-home senior care and how the program benefits both those receiving services and those providing them. The episode concludes with a lighter story from Australia, where one man has earned recognition as the loudest person in the world. Thank you for listening to Fridays with Larry. Marissa Deckert on the Spark Fishers Festival for 2026
Fishers Parks and Recreation Director Marissa Deckert joins the LarryInFishers.com Podcast for a full preview of Spark Fishers 2026, the city’s biggest community celebration of the year. This year’s festival has been reimagined as a two-day event, set for Friday, June 26, and Saturday, June 27, in downtown Fishers. Deckert explains why the city moved away from a weeklong schedule and returned to a more concentrated “hometown community feel.” Among the highlights: the Big Ten Volleyball Tournament, coming to Fishers for the first time this November, will serve as Grand Marshal of the Spark Fishers parade. The tournament will also be part of the festival experience with volleyball-themed activations and photo opportunities. Friday night features a free concert by a Pink tribute band, complete with an aerial performance, followed by the popular Spark Fishers drone show. Saturday brings the street fair, car and art show, more than 100 vendors, seven entertainment stages, children’s activities, the parade and a fireworks finale. Deckert also discusses what is new this year, including a silent disco, drum circles, a thrift-a-thon, local music school performances and expanded family activities. She also shares details on sensory-inclusive features, parking changes and shuttle service from Cross Point Plaza. Listen for everything you need to know before heading to Spark Fishers 2026.

This week on Fridays With Larry: local volunteer Virginia Tate joins to talk about the value of volunteering and how it keeps her body and mind active as she ages. Larry then takes the national pulse as the U.S. nears its 250th birthday, contrasting today's polling with how Americans felt at the 1976 bicentennial. Plus: how players and officials at the FIFA World Cup communicate across so many different languages — and the story behind why Boston is running out of beer during its World Cup matches, with a Scottish twist. In this episode: - Virginia Tate on volunteering and active aging - America's mood at 250 vs. 1976 - Bridging the language barrier at the World Cup - Why Boston ran dry — blame Scotland New episodes every Friday. We dig into the district's overall budget picture, declining enrollment, and Senate Enrolled Act 1 — the 2025 Indiana property tax law reshaping how schools are funded. Brown also breaks down the district's budget-cutting committee and roughly $7.8 million in identified reductions, new fees coming for the 2026-2027 school year, and the operating referendum headed to voters on the November 3 ballot.
