From Exam Room to Trail Ride: Leadership, Boundaries, and the Human–Animal Bond with Stith Keiser

from Why Do Pets Matter? Hosted by Debra Hamilton, Esq. · host Debra Hamilton, Esq.

In this episode of Why Do Pets Matter, I sit down with Stith Keiser, CEO of Blue Heron Consulting, son of a veterinarian, husband to a small animal veterinarian, and lifelong horse-and-dog guy. Stith shares why pets matter to him on a soul-deep level, from the heelers who work cattle with him in Wyoming and sleep in their own sleeping bags, to the horse who helps him reset after a long day, to the shelter dog who quietly helped a struggling family member choose to keep going. We talk about how animals become our constant companions, our grounding force, and sometimes the reason we get out of bed in the morning. From there, we dive into the “nuts and bolts” side of the human–animal bond: how practice culture, communication, and clear expectations can make or break the experience for both clients and veterinary teams. Stith and I explore client complaints, negative reviews, boundaries, “non-compliant” pet owners, and why setting expectations up front is an act of kindness, not avoidance. He also gives us a peek behind the scenes of Blue Heron’s wilderness CE trips in Wyoming—race-approved continuing education on horseback, deep conversations around the campfire, and a few days with no cell service to remember who you are outside the exam room. If you’ve ever wished you could reconnect with why you started in veterinary medicine in the first place, this conversation is for you.
