Ask Mambo
In this engaging episode of Why Do Pets Matter?, Debra Hamilton welcomed Anthony Cospito and Arlu Gomez, the founders of Ask Mambo, an AI-powered assistant designed specifically for dog owners. Born from their personal journey with their beloved dog Mambo, whose health challenges inspired them to create a resource they wished had existed, Anthony and Arlu shared how their platform is transforming the way pet owners connect with, understand, and care for their dogs. Ask Mambo, which launched in October 2025, uses a vast data set integrated through ChatGPT, enriched by user-submitted information, to deliver personalized advice on diet, training, health, and behavior. With over 45 breeds currently serviced and a growing user base, the platform is free and accessible at askmambo.com. The conversation covered the emotional power of pets, the practical applications of AI in pet care, and the exciting road ahead for Ask Mambo as it expands its community and partnerships. 3 Key Highlights from Our Conversation 1. AI That Truly Knows Your Pet Ask Mambo goes beyond generic advice by learning each individual pet's profile. Owners can upload vet reports, food labels, and health history so the AI becomes increasingly personalized over time. Anthony explained that the platform bridges the gap between vet visits, giving owners reliable, fact-based guidance exactly when they need it, day or night. 2. Preparing Pet Owners for Better Vet Visits One of the most powerful features Debra and her guests discussed is Ask Mambo's ability to help owners prepare for veterinary appointments. The platform suggests non-confrontational phrasing for questions and allows owners to send organized notes and backstory to their vet ahead of time, improving communication, reducing anxiety, and ultimately leading to better outcomes for pets. 3. Compassionate Support Through Pet Loss Arlu shared a deeply personal account of how Ask Mambo helped them cope with Mambo's passing, offering emotional reassurance and practical guidance through grief. This dimension of the platform reflects the founders' deep understanding that the human-animal bond doesn't end at the last vet visit, and that pet owners deserve support through every stage of that journey. When Environmental Law Meets Animal Law: The Case of the Million-Dollar Horses
Welcome to Why Do Pets Matter Podcast where we explore the conflicts, the care, and the connections that define our relationships with animals. I'm Debra Hamilton, and today I'm joined by Dr. Mark Bamberger, an attorney who's carved out one of the most unique niches in animal law. Today, we're diving into something extraordinary: a case that sits at the intersection of environmental law, animal law, and the fight to preserve one of the rarest horse bloodlines on the planet. We're talking about Serbian prehistoric horses, (https://www.mountainhorsesserbia.com/) Chief Joseph Appaloosas (https://www.appaloosa.com) worth $1.5 million each, who were poisoned by salmonella contamination in their Kentucky water supply. This isn't just about money. It's about genetic preservation, environmental accountability, and what happens when our legal system is asked to value something truly irreplaceable. Mark's going to walk us through the failed mediation, the upcoming trial, and why he believes this case could set precedent for how we protect rare species from environmental harm. We'll also talk about his transition into semi-retirement, his new rescue poodles, and why long COVID has him focusing only on the cases that truly matter. Whether you're a breeder, an environmentalist, a lawyer, a pet service provider, a pet owner or someone who simply cares about justice for animals, this conversation will challenge how you think about animal law. Let's get started.

Mediation, Man's Best Friend & Breaking Impasse
Why Do Pets Matter? Podcast Episode Feature: David A. Hoffman Mediation, Man's Best Friend & Breaking Impasse 🎙️ Podcast Episode Introduction What if the secret to breaking a legal deadlock walked into the room on four legs? Welcome back to Why Do Pets Matter? — the podcast where we explore the profound, complicated, and sometimes hilarious ways animals shape our lives, our relationships, and yes, our legal disputes. I'm Debra Hamilton, and today's guest is someone who has been quietly revolutionizing the way we think about conflict resolution — one wagging tail at a time. David A. Hoffman is a mediator, attorney, and founding partner of the Boston Law Collaborative. He's a lecturer at Harvard Law School, a thought leader in the world of alternative dispute resolution — and the proud handler of Bella, a golden retriever who may be the most effective mediator in New England. Bella has attended numerous mediations and has a perfect settlement record. Not one loss. Zero impasses on her watch. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why bringing a dog into a legal dispute room can accomplish what hours of argument cannot • The science behind why pets release oxytocin — and why that matters at a negotiating table • How to put the pet's best interest at the center of a dispute — not just the humans' • David's brand-new book, Breaking Impasse — and the powerful concept of 'malatina' that could change how we resolve animal conflicts forever • Why courts are often the worst place to settle a dispute about an animal — and what to do instead David and I also get personal — talking about what it means to see someone more fully when a dog is in the room, how pets expose our shared humanity even in the middle of a fight, and why the physical environment of mediation matters more than most practitioners realize. Whether you're a mediator, a veterinarian, an attorney, a pet owner in conflict, or just someone who believes animals deserve more than a footnote in the legal system — this conversation is for you. Stay with us. Bella would want you to. David A. Hoffman, Esq. Mediator, Arbitrator, Collaborative Lawyer (he / him / his) why? From Exam Room to Trail Ride: Leadership, Boundaries, and the Human–Animal Bond with Stith Keiser
In this episode of Why Do Pets Matter, I sit down with Stith Keiser, CEO of Blue Heron Consulting, son of a veterinarian, husband to a small animal veterinarian, and lifelong horse-and-dog guy. Stith shares why pets matter to him on a soul-deep level, from the heelers who work cattle with him in Wyoming and sleep in their own sleeping bags, to the horse who helps him reset after a long day, to the shelter dog who quietly helped a struggling family member choose to keep going. We talk about how animals become our constant companions, our grounding force, and sometimes the reason we get out of bed in the morning. From there, we dive into the “nuts and bolts” side of the human–animal bond: how practice culture, communication, and clear expectations can make or break the experience for both clients and veterinary teams. Stith and I explore client complaints, negative reviews, boundaries, “non-compliant” pet owners, and why setting expectations up front is an act of kindness, not avoidance. He also gives us a peek behind the scenes of Blue Heron’s wilderness CE trips in Wyoming—race-approved continuing education on horseback, deep conversations around the campfire, and a few days with no cell service to remember who you are outside the exam room. If you’ve ever wished you could reconnect with why you started in veterinary medicine in the first place, this conversation is for you. Living On Purpose (With a Corgi): Belief, Biology, and Behavior with Jim Bishop
In this episode of Why Do Pets Matter, I sit down with leadership coach and Conjunction Leadership founder, Jim Bishop, for a conversation that goes straight to the heart of why we feel stuck, burned out, or stretched too thin. Jim shares how growing up on a farm and now walking with his corgi still helps him feel grounded and unconditionally loved, and how animals have always been his anchor when life feels overwhelming. We explore his powerful framework of beliefs, biology, and behavior, how the stories we tell ourselves shape our nervous system and, ultimately, how we show up as leaders, veterinarians, clients, and humans. Together, we talk about living on purpose for a purpose, why white-knuckling your way through isn’t the same as thriving, and how pets quietly remind us of who we are beneath all the hustle. If you’ve ever wondered, “Is this really how I want to live?” this conversation is for you. Connection Heals: Turning Medicine Into Meaning with Dr. Adam Christman
In this episode of Why Do Pets Matter, I sit down with the incomparable Dr. Adam Christman, Chief Veterinary Officer at dvm360, podcaster, content creator, and proud “pet parent first, veterinarian second.” Adam shares why pets are, in his words, “living, breathing proof that connection heals” and how they turn medicine into meaning for veterinary professionals and families alike. We talk about what it really feels like to be the “other family doctor,” the emotional glue pets create in homes, and how every stabilized heartbeat or comforted patient ripples out to the people who love them. We also dive into the tricky stuff: money conversations, Dr. Google, breeder and rescue communication, spectrum of care, and why veterinarians need to be seen as pet parents too. Adam’s stories about dachshund “wiener walks,” generational pet families, and the evolving language of “pet parents” versus “clients” will make you smile, think, and maybe see your own vet a little differently. Being the Person Your Pet Thinks You Are with Dr. Amy Grimm
In this episode of Why Do Pets Matter, I sit down with Dr. Amy Grimm, veterinarian and founder of Daring DVM Coaching, for a heartfelt conversation about burnout, nervous system health, and the human animal bond. Amy shares how our pets literally help regulate our nervous systems, why that sense of calm and belonging matters so much, and how we can bring the same compassion we offer our animals back to ourselves. We talk about perfectionism in veterinary medicine, clients who arrive in survival mode, and what happens in the exam room when everyone’s stress is running the show. Amy offers practical, grounded tools like micro breaks, simple grounding rituals, and self compassion so veterinarians and pet professionals can show up as anchors instead of adversaries. If you have ever beaten yourself up after a hard appointment, wondered how to repair a rough conversation, or needed a reminder that you are more than your worst day, this episode is for you. Mattering Repair and Getting It Right with Josh Vaisman
In this episode of Why Do Pets Matter, I welcome back my dear friend and returning guest, Josh Vaisman, founder of Flourish. Josh and I dive into what it really means to matter in our relationships with both people and pets, and how that feeling of mattering is at the heart of wellbeing for all of us. We talk about the difference between always trying to be right and working together to get it right for each unique pet family. Josh shares powerful insights on collaboration versus compromise, spectrum of care, and why “doing what is best for this animal and this person in this moment” is a much healthier guide than chasing some perfect idea of “the right thing.” We also explore real world tools for handling conflict more gracefully, including how to pause, repair after a hard interaction, and ask curious questions instead of reacting from a place of hurt. Pets, People, and One Health: Why Our Animals Make Us Whole With Dr. Michael Blackwell
In this episode of Why Do Pets Matter, I welcome back my dear friend and repeat guest, Dr. Michael Blackwell. Michael has worn many hats in veterinary medicine and public health, and now he is leading powerful work through the Program for Pet Health Equity and the One Health Forum. Together, we talk about how families have changed and why most households today are truly “biodiverse families,” made up of both humans and animals. Michael shares why our current systems for housing, healthcare, transportation, and social services were never really designed with pets in mind and how that creates real heartbreak and barriers for people who love their animals. We explore the emotional and physical health benefits of pets, the importance of keeping seniors and their animals together, how laws and policies are slowly catching up, and why cross sector collaboration is the only way forward. You will hear stories that capture exactly why pets matter so deeply and how much better we can do when we see them as true family members. Chris shares how his partnership with the FI GPS tracker has transformed the way families protect their dogs, why peace of mind matters just as much as style, and how data like steps, barking activity, and even water intake can help us understand our pets on a deeper level. We also talk about his love for the Irish Setter breed, the joy and chaos of raising active dogs, the way shelter needs have shifted since the pandemic, and how Lucky Dog gives back to the organizations doing the hardest work in animal welfare. Root-Cause Healing and the Soul of Our Pets with Dr. Marlene Siegel
In this episode of Why Do Pets Matter, I sit down with @drmarlenesiegel, an integrative veterinarian and bio-regulatory medicine practitioner who is deeply committed to finding the root cause of “dis-ease” in our pets. Our conversation goes far beyond symptoms and lab work and into the deeper questions of why we are here, what our pets are really doing in our lives, and how nature itself holds clues to our healing. Marlene shares her belief that we are living in a kind of hologram where animals, bees, trees, and the natural world are constantly communicating with us and offering solutions. We talk about how our pets often mirror our emotional and physical imbalances, how their presence can help regulate our nervous systems through energetic “entrainment,” and why the animals in our lives at any given moment are rarely an accident. Heal the Beasts: A Curious History of Veterinary Medicine With Dr. Philipp Schott
In this episode of Why Do Pets Matter, I sit down with Dr. Philipp Schott, a retired veterinarian from Winnipeg and author of The Accidental Veterinarian and his latest book, Heal the Beasts: A Jaunt Through the Curious History of the Veterinary Arts. We take a fascinating walk through time to explore how humans have cared for animals for thousands of years – from a 12,000 BC puppy buried with its people, to medieval “elfshot” cattle, all the way to modern small animal practice. Dr. Schott and I talk about how the human–animal bond has always been intertwined with survival, emotion, and even spirituality, why industrial agriculture is actually the historical exception (not the norm), and how listening, trust, and honest communication between veterinarians and pet parents are at the heart of good care. We also dig into the role of money, options, and transparency in either strengthening or straining the vet–client relationship, and why showing a little vulnerability as a veterinarian can actually build deeper trust. If you love animals, veterinary history, or just want to see modern vet med in a whole new light, this episode will absolutely speak to you. Dr. Fine takes us on his journey from growing up in a pet-free home to becoming one of the foremost advocates for the human-animal bond, a path that began with an unexpected friendship with a gerbil named Sasha. Dr. Fine’s contributions to the field are immense. He served 42 years as a professor at Cal Poly, is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in children with ADHD, learning disabilities, and developmental disorders, and has been recognized with the William F. McCulloch Award for Excellence in Human-Animal Interaction Education and Practice as well as the CSU Wang Award for Distinguished Professor. Finding the Third Way: Conflict, Compassion, and Why Pets Matter with Amanda Ripley
I’m beyond thrilled to welcome my friend Amanda Ripley to the Why Do Pets Matter podcast! Amanda is a brilliant journalist and the author of one of my all-time favorite books, High Conflict. In this episode, we talk all about what happens when we stop digging in our heels and start leaning into connection—yes, even in the middle of a disagreement (or two). Amanda and I dive into how good conflict—the kind that challenges and stretches us without tearing us apart—can show up in all areas of life, from Capitol Hill to our own backyards. And you know I had to bring it back to pets! We talk about how animals can become both the heart of a dispute and the key to healing, and why conversations about pets often open the door to deeper understanding. You’ll also hear Amanda share how a former gang leader inspired her to think differently about political violence (and dog sharing, believe it or not!), and we reflect on what it means to regulate our emotions, listen actively, and choose curiosity over conflict.
