Funding Your Dream: Crafting the Perfect Business Plan Request

from Sales For The Nigerian Business Person: The Sales and Marketing Blueprint · host Tavershima Ayede

So, you have a brilliant business idea. You've poured your heart and soul into developing a business plan, outlining your vision, strategies, and projections. But there's one crucial element that often gets overlooked: the funding request. In my recent group coaching session with Martin and Victor, two entrepreneurs with ambitious plans – Martin with his SIM and NIN registration business, and Victor with his car fleet venture – we delved deep into the importance of this often-neglected section. Their plans were solid, but they lacked a clear, compelling funding request. Why the Funding Request Matters Think of your business plan as a map. The funding request is the compass, guiding potential investors to understand precisely what you need and how their investment will be utilized. It's not just about asking for money; it's about demonstrating your financial acumen and strategic foresight. Here's what a robust funding request should include: * The Amount Requested: Be specific. How much capital do you need? * Allocation of Funds: Detail how you intend to spend the money. Will it be used for inventory, equipment, marketing, or working capital? * Return on Investment (ROI): Investors want to know how their investment will generate returns. Provide realistic projections and timelines. * Repayment Strategy: Outline your plan for repaying the investment, including timelines and potential interest rates. Beyond the Numbers: Showing Thought and Contingency While precise figures are important, the most critical aspect is demonstrating that you've thoroughly considered your financial needs and potential contingencies. As I emphasized to Martin and Victor, showing that you've explored various scenarios and have a plan B is just as important as the numbers themselves. The Investor Relationship: It's a Sale! Raising finance is essentially a sales process. It involves: * Prospecting: Identifying potential investors who align with your business vision. * Qualification and Discovery: Understanding their investment criteria and determining if your opportunity matches their needs. * Proposal/Presentation: Articulating your value proposition and showcasing the potential returns. * Closing: Securing the investment. * Investor/Stakeholder Management: Maintaining communication and providing regular updates. Exploring Diverse Funding Options We also explored various funding avenues beyond traditional bank loans. Consider these options: * Friends, Family, and Associates: They may be willing to invest in your vision. * Microfinance Banks: These institutions offer smaller loans with flexible terms. * Islamic Banking/Non-Interest Finance: As I shared from my experience with Sterling Bank, these options can provide financing for equipment and inventory purchases without traditional interest charges. The bank buys the assets, and you purchase them back over time. By following these guidelines, you can significantly increase your chances of securing the funding you need to turn your business dreams into reality.
