Chief Kevin Legate, Officer Jake Taylor, and Officer Mike Ingles from the Galesburg Police Department joined Galesburg's Morning News on Monday, June 8, to preview a big week for Special Olympics in Galesburg. Wednesday, June 10 — McDonald's fundraiser on North Henderson Street, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. The Special Olympics torch arrives from the Quad Cities around noon at North Lake Storey Road and North Henderson Street, and officers will run it into McDonald's on North Henderson Street. The GHS Football team is volunteering at the fundraiser. All area law enforcement agencies are invited. Thursday, June 11 — The torch run begins at the Public Safety Building, 150 S. Broad St., at 7:30 a.m., with an 8 a.m. start. The route runs north on Cedar to Main Street, east on Main to Grand Avenue, and out to the Highway 97 and 150 intersection near Knoxville. Anyone is welcome to run along. The officers talk about what it was like to work the Galesburg High School Spring Games, the moment Officer Taylor told Chief Legate "we have to get this back," and what it means to watch Special Olympics athletes compete. The Summer Games run June 12–14 in Bloomington, with 3,500 athletes competing. Galesburg officers will run the torch into the stadium to light the central flame and open the games.
