Garden of Doom E.270 Union of the Snake & Dragons

from Garden of Thought · host Jeff Lippman

Professor Jon F. White from Crecganford returns to cover the topic of the great serpent. Yes, dragons. Were they always dragons? Turns out probably not. Snakes are the original universal human boogeyman. There's all sorts of evidence for that proposition. But the myths support this too. The snake and the oldest dragons have more in common than the fire breathing children of Kalesi or Smog from Tolkien fame. What did these serpents represent whether guardian or enemy? As usual, we traverse the world and back to survey various myths and analyze when and why snakes turned into some form of larger, more terrible reptile, and ultimately into what we all picture when we utter "dragon". Where does fire breathing come from? What did St.George slay? How does using a cow's head as fishing bait relate to Thor's epic end? Plus, a few sidetracks and backtracks.
