Op 5 juni 2023 was het 150 jaar geleden dat het eerst schip met contractarbeiders uit India aanmeerde in Suriname. De arbeiders gingen op de plantages werken, waar na de afschaffing van de slavernij een arbeidstekort was ontstaan. De contractarbeiders zochten een beter leven. Vaak werkten ze in vergelijkbare, barre omstandigheden als de tot slaaf gemaakten voor hen. Met de komst van de Indiërs in Suriname ontstond er een nieuwe bevolkingsgroep, de Surinaamse Hindostanen. Zij drukten hun stempel op de Surinaamse cultuur en later -toen een grote groep Hindostanen na de onafhankelijkheid van Suriname naar Nederland trok- ook in Nederland.In deze podcastserie, die aansluit op de televisieserie De Reis van de Indiërs onderzoekt presentator Narsingh Balwantsingh welke plek het verhaal van de Indiase contractarbeiders -ons verhaal- heeft in de Nederlandse geschiedenis.
