Genesis 19
from The Readings
Genesis 19 read aloud, in a fresh direct translation from the Hebrew — plain modern English, nothing added. Translator's notes: • Genesis 19:11 — בַּסַּנְוֵרִים (bassanverim): chose "blindness". Alternatives: "a dazzling glare", "blinding light". Why: the word occurs only here and once in Kings for a struck army that cannot find its way, and its root suggests light that blinds; the rendering names the effect the verse itself shows — men who cannot find the entrance. • Genesis 19:14 — לֹקְחֵי בְנֹתָיו (loqchei venotav): chose "who were taking his daughters". Alternatives: "who had married his daughters", "who were betrothed to his daughters". Why: the Hebrew participle says only "taking" his daughters and does not fix whether the marriages were completed or arranged; the rendering keeps the text's own unfinished wording.
