Genesis 22
from The Readings
Genesis 22 read aloud, in a fresh direct translation from the Hebrew — plain modern English, nothing added. Translator's notes: • Genesis 22:2 — יְחִידְךָ (yechidkha): chose "your only one". Alternatives: "your unique one", "your beloved one". Why: the word stresses that Isaac stands alone in his role; whether it means only-born or uniquely beloved has long been contested, and Abraham had another son. • Genesis 22:8 — יִרְאֶה־לּוֹ (yireh-lo): chose "will see to". Alternatives: "will provide", "will see for himself". Why: the verb is literally "will see", and Abraham's answer plays on seeing and providing at once — the same word returns in the place-name in verse 14. • Genesis 22:18 — וְהִתְבָּרְכוּ (vehitbarkhu): chose "will be blessed". Alternatives: "will bless themselves". Why: the verb form can be read either as passive (be blessed) or reflexive (bless themselves by invoking the offspring's name); the passive reading is followed here.
