Genesis 27
from The Readings
Genesis 27 read aloud, in a fresh direct translation from the Hebrew — plain modern English, nothing added. Translator's notes: • Genesis 27:36 — וַיַּעְקְבֵנִי (vaya'keveni): chose "he has taken me by the heel". Alternatives: "he has supplanted me", "he has cheated me", "he has outwitted me". Why: Esau's word is a pun on Jacob's name and on the heel (akev) Jacob held at birth; the literal heel wording keeps the pun visible. • Genesis 27:40 — תָּרִיד (tarid): chose "when you grow restless". Alternatives: "when you break loose", "when you roam free", "when you rebel". Why: the verb is rare and its sense here — restlessness, wandering, or throwing off restraint — is genuinely uncertain.
