Genesis 32
from The Readings
Genesis 32 read aloud, in a fresh direct translation from the Hebrew — plain modern English, nothing added. Translator's notes: • Genesis 32:21 — אֲכַפְּרָה פָנָיו (akhappera fanav): chose "I will appease his face". Alternatives: "I will cover his face", "I will make atonement for his face". Why: the verb is the atonement verb used of a person; with "face" as its object it pictures turning away anger, and the literal face-wording keeps Jacob's wordplay with "see his face" and "lift up my face" in the same verse. • Genesis 32:33 — גִּיד הַנָּשֶׁה (gid ha-nasheh): chose "the sinew of the thigh". Alternatives: "the sciatic sinew", "the thigh sinew that shrank". Why: nasheh is a rare word of uncertain sense; the phrase names the sinew on the thigh socket, and the rendering avoids a modern anatomical claim the Hebrew does not make.
