Genesis 37
from The Readings
Genesis 37 read aloud, in a fresh direct translation from the Hebrew — plain modern English, nothing added. Translator's notes: • Genesis 37:3 — כְּתֹנֶת פַּסִּים (ketonet passim): chose "a long robe". Alternatives: "a robe of many colors", "an ornamented robe". Why: passim is rare and its exact sense is unsettled — it may denote length reaching the hands and feet, or fine colored work; "long robe" rests on the word's clearest attested sense without inventing colors. • Genesis 37:36 — שַׂר הַטַּבָּחִים (sar ha-tabbachim): chose "the chief of the guards". Alternatives: "the captain of the guard", "the chief executioner", "the chief cook". Why: tabbachim literally means slaughterers; as a court title it covers the royal guard who also carried out executions, and "guards" keeps that range.
