Genesis 38
from The Readings
Genesis 38 read aloud, in a fresh direct translation from the Hebrew — plain modern English, nothing added. Translator's notes: • Genesis 38:21 — קְדֵשָׁה (qedeshah): chose "shrine-prostitute". Alternatives: "prostitute" (the ordinary word, used in verse 15), "temple woman". Why: Hirah deliberately uses a different, more respectable word than the one the narrator used of Tamar's disguise; keeping the distinction preserves his tact in asking.
