Genesis 47
from The Readings
Genesis 47 read aloud, in a fresh direct translation from the Hebrew — plain modern English, nothing added. Translator's notes: • Genesis 47:21 — הֶעֱבִיר אֹתוֹ לֶעָרִים (he'evir oto le'arim): chose "he moved them to the cities". Alternatives: the ancient Greek and Samaritan traditions read "he made them slaves". Why: the Hebrew text as received says he transferred the people cityward; the differing ancient reading is recorded here rather than substituted. • Genesis 47:31 — הַמִּטָּה (hamittah): chose "the bed". Alternatives: "the staff" (hamatteh, the reading of the ancient Greek tradition). Why: the pointed Hebrew text reads bed; the one-letter difference makes the staff reading a genuine and old alternative.
