Genesis 5
from The Readings
Genesis 5 read aloud, in a fresh direct translation from the Hebrew — plain modern English, nothing added. Translator's notes: • Genesis 5:2 — אָדָם (adam): chose "Adam" as the name Elohim gives them. Alternatives: "Humankind", "Man". Why: adam is both the word for humankind and the man's name, and this chapter is his genealogy; the rendering keeps the name the chapter itself is tracing, and the shared name for male and female is the text's own wording. • Genesis 5:24 — וְאֵינֶנּוּ (ve-einennu): chose "and he was no more". Alternatives: "and he was not", "and he disappeared", "and he was gone". Why: the phrase says only that Enoch was not there anymore, and the next clause gives the reason the text gives — Elohim took him; the rendering adds no manner or destination. • Genesis 5:29 — נֹחַ / יְנַחֲמֵנוּ (Noach / yenachamenu): chose "Noah" and "will comfort us". Alternatives: the name explained by the word for rest (nuach), as in "this one will give us rest". Why: Lamech's own explanation sounds the name against nacham, comfort, for relief from work on the cursed ground, so the rendering follows his explanation as spoken.
