Genesis 8
from The Readings
Genesis 8 read aloud, in a fresh direct translation from the Hebrew — plain modern English, nothing added. Translator's notes: • Genesis 8:1 — וַיִּזְכֹּר (vayizkor): chose "remembered". Alternatives: "took note of", "turned to act for". Why: when Elohim "remembers" someone in Hebrew narrative, it means he moves to act on their behalf; Noah had not slipped his mind — the remembering is the turning point, not the recovery of lost information. • Genesis 8:17 — הַיְצֵא (haytze, the read-aloud form; the written form is הוֹצֵא, hotze): chose "bring out". Alternatives: following the written form gives nearly the same command, "take out". Why: the Hebrew text carries both a written form and a traditional read form at this word; translations follow the read form, and the difference does not change the command.
