Good News: Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2023

House Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) introduced the Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2023. The bill would update front-of-package food labeling requirements, require updates to the ingredient list on packaged foods, and apply consumer friendly labeling requirements.Among many other labeling issues, the bill would amend FALPCA (Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act) to require that food product packaging disclose ALL gluten-containing grains. We've been down this road before with the FLMA of 2021, but we are making progress. As is stated in the press release, “Food labels play an important role in managing conditions such as celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, but they need to be complete and easier to understand.” said Senator Cardin."
