Gordie Sampson - Cape Breton's Hit Maker

from The Canadian Gothic · host CanadianGothic / Curiouscast

For as far back as history can tell, inhabitants of Cape Breton Island have found sustenance in our fisheries, our forests, our coal, Steel, and of course tourism. These industries have brought people to Cape Breton from around the world or sent a little bit of Cape Breton to them. But, if we were considering the island’s greatest exports, well that may come as a bit of a surprise. An unassuming Cape Bretoner, with a smile much bigger than his ego, is responsible for some of the world's biggest songs by some of the world's biggest artists. It's fair to say that Gordie Sampson was able to send a taste of Cape Breton Island to more people than our natural industries ever could and he has the Grammys to show for it. After achieving success in Canada as a solo performer, Gordie found his place in writing for others. As it all turned out, his ability to connect clever lyrics with traditional Celtic inspired melody has made him a go to for country music's biggest stars. To name just a few, Gordie’s songs were recorded by: WIllie Nelson, Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Trisha Yearwood, Luke Bryan, Martina MacBride, Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, Lee Ann Rymes, Miley Cyrus, Bon Jovi, and perhaps his biggest... the Grammy award winning song by Carrie Underwood 'Jesus Take the Wheel". So needless to say, Gordie has unique insight into the music business and a hell of a lot of stories. In this episode of Nighttime, I'm proud to be joined by Cape Breton's hit maker Gordie Sampson.
