Some believe Grýla represents the dangers of Iceland’s brutal winters, and hikers still report eerie sightings near her legendary home in the lava fields.The Tomte: Scandinavia’s Watchful Farm SpiritThe tomte is a small, bearded guardian spirit tied to the land and the farm. He protects households, watches over animals, and expects respect in return. If offended, he becomes mischievous or destructive. Families traditionally left him a bowl of Christmas Eve porridge with butter on top, or else risk his wrath.
