More than three decades later, the discovery of a submerged 1954 Ford finally helped solve the mystery and revealed the identity of the woman who had been buried as Jane Doe.But the Lady of the Lake is only one of Lake Lanier’s paranormal legends. Send us Fan MailBefore we get into this episode, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of Elise Roenigk, owner of the 1886 Crescent Hotel and the 1905 Basin Park Hotel, who passed away on the morning of July 19, 2026. Elise and her husband Marty purchased the Crescent in 1997, and after Marty’s death in 2009, she continued that work on her own for another sixteen years. In 2022, Historic Hotels of America honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The hotel described her as a familiar and supportive presence, known for her walks through the property, her conversations with employees and guests, and her genuine care for the people who made the hotel special. She considered her staff an extension of her family. Andi and I are visiting her hotels this week, and we will be carrying her memory with us when we do.The Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas has been called America's most haunted hotel for decades, and this episode explains why. We dig into the dark history hiding behind that title: a fraudulent cancer hospital run by a con man named Norman Baker, the forty two confirmed deaths that happened there in just two years, and the ghosts that are still being reported inside the building today.Built in 1886 by former Arkansas governor Powell Clayton, the Crescent Hotel started as the most opulent resort in the country, sitting on top of a mountain overlooking the town. Andi and Feliz walk through how the hotel fell into disrepair after the spa tourism boom faded, became a girls' boarding school, and then sat empty until Norman Baker showed up in 1937 with a radio station, a purple car, and a fake cure for cancer.Baker's Baker Hospital and Health Resort promised treatments for cancer without surgery, radium, or x-ray. What patients actually received was a mixture that included carbolic acid, the same compound used in Nazi concentration camps around the same period. The episode covers how Baker isolated patients from their families, forged their letters home, and hid the dying in a soundproofed wing of the hotel. It also covers the 2019 discovery that proved the decades of rumors were true, when a landscaper unearthed hundreds of medical bottles and jars buried on the property, leading to a full excavation by the University of Arkansas.From there, the episode moves into the hauntings the Crescent Hotel is famous for. Andi and Feliz cover Michael, the Irish stonemason believed to haunt room 218 and known for pulling back shower curtains. They talk about Theodora, a former cancer patient who tidies up room 419 and stacks loose coins by denomination. Her name comes from an Old High German word meaning bright or shining. In early folklore, she was a guardian of women’s work, especially spinning and weaving, and a protector of children, animals, and vulnerable souls. Those that did not faced terrifying consequences.Despite centuries of church condemnation and attempts to recast her as a demonic witch, Frau Perchta never disappeared. These stories come from a culture shaped by Confucian values, ancestor rites, and a deep respect for the spirit world.We start with the 귀신 gwishin, spirits who could not move on because something about their death was unfinished. The 처녀귀신 cheonyeo gwishin, or virgin ghost, appears as a woman in white who died unmarried and has no place in her family’s ancestral rites. The 물귀신 mul gwishin, the spirit of someone who drowned, is said to pull the living underwater to take their place. The eerie 달걀귀신 dalgyal gwishin, or egg ghost, has no face or features at all and is considered an omen of death. These ghosts represent fear, loneliness, and the consequences of dying without proper rituals or closure.Then we turn to Korea’s cryptids and shapeshifters. The 구미호 gumiho, the nine tailed fox, can transform into a beautiful woman who steals hearts or livers. The 이무기 imugi, a giant serpent, is a proto dragon that strives for transformation and power. The 불가사리 bulgasari, the Iron Eater, consumes metal and symbolizes force that cannot be stopped. The 해태 haetae, a lion like guardian creature, protects against injustice and disaster and is still honored in modern Seoul.These beings are not just fantasy. Around 4:47 p.m., witnesses across the Midwest and Ontario reported a bright fireball streaking through the evening sky. In Kecksburg, residents saw the glowing object descend into nearby woods, moving steadily and appearing to be under control.Locals rushed to the scene expecting a plane crash but found a metallic, acorn-shaped craft about the size of a small car. It was bronze in color and covered in strange markings that looked like hieroglyphics. Within an hour, men in suits and military uniforms arrived, cleared the area, and sealed it off. Witnesses said soldiers in radiation suits carried a box into the woods, and by nightfall, a flatbed truck hauled away a large, tarp-covered object under heavy guard.Early newspaper reports confirmed an unidentified object had fallen in Kecksburg, but by the next day, the Army claimed nothing was found. The official explanation was that a meteor burned up in the atmosphere. Locals didn’t buy it. UFO researchers have called Kecksburg “the Roswell of the East” because of the quick military response, secrecy, and later denial.Some believe it was a Soviet space probe called Kosmos 96, which had a similar acorn shape, but records show it reentered Earth’s atmosphere over Canada hours earlier. Others think it was a secret U.S. test capsule or experimental vehicle. In the 1990s, NASA was sued for information about the case and later admitted that related files had been lost or destroyed.Today, Kecksburg embraces its mystery. Following her death, the family reported scratching noises, objects moving, and beds shaking whenever Roland was nearby. The activity eventually led to a series of exorcisms performed by Jesuit priests in St. Louis. Witnesses described violent contortions, objects levitating, and words appearing scratched into the boy’s skin. After weeks of ritual and struggle, the priests claimed the possession ended when Roland cried out that the demon was gone. He later recounted a vision of Saint Michael driving out the evil. His case became the basis for the novel and film The Exorcist and continues to raise questions about whether the events were spiritual, psychological, or a combination of both.Half a world away and decades later, another case would shock the public. In 2005, at a small Orthodox convent in Tanacu, Romania, a young novice named Maricica Irina Cornici began showing signs of distress. She had been diagnosed with schizophrenia at a local hospital but was released to the convent’s care. Believing she was possessed, the priest and several nuns chose to perform an exorcism rather than return her to medical treatment. Irina was restrained, bound to a wooden cross, and kept in isolation while prayers were said. She was given little food or water and died during transport to the hospital. The Tanacu exorcism divided Romania. Many saw it as a tragedy of faith overtaking reason, while others believed Irina truly suffered from demonic possession. Both cases sit at the intersection of faith, psychology, and ethics.
