关陇起义始于公元524年，秦州刺史李彦的暴政激起了陈明、薛真等人的反抗。义军推举羌人莫折大提为帅，建立秦国，年号天剑。起义军一路攻城略地，但在黑水与政府军决战中遭受重创。北魏政府联合外敌，分化义军。莫折念生虽一度反攻成功，但内部叛变不断，最终在527年兵败。尽管如此，义军继续在万俟醜奴的领导下与北魏抗争，直至530年醜奴牺牲。
