En estos momentos, se han cumplido algo más de 40 años desde el inicio "oficial" de la pandemia de SIDA, causada por el virus VIH, de la que comenzó a conocerse su existencia allá por el mes de mayo de 1981. Algo más de veinte años más tarde, Jorge Laborda escribía un artículo en el que relataba el efecto beneficioso sobre el progreso del SIDA de la infección simultánea del virus del VIH con otro virus. Se trataba de un descubrimiento bastante sorprendente que revelaba que un virus "benévolo", denominado Pegivirus humano o GBV-C, puede interferir con la infección del VIH y mitigar la enfermedad que este causa. Varios trabajos de investigación publicados recientemente confirman la interferencia que el virus C ejerce sobre el virus VIH.
