癌症发病率在中年以后显著上升，例如，乳腺癌、前列腺癌、肺癌、结直肠癌等常见癌症的高发年龄多在50岁以上。但是近期一项研究指出，癌症和衰老是一把双刃剑，在老年早期癌症的发病率会明显提高，但在老年后期，由于衰老细胞的活性在下降，反而在一定程度上抑制了癌症的发生发展。
