Should you take off gutter guards in the winter?

Whether you should remove gutter guards in the winter is determined by your climate, gutter guard type, and maintenance needs. Gutter guards are intended to prevent debris such as leaves and twigs out of gutters while allowing water to flow. However, in the winter, snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can all impair their performance. In milder climates with less snowfall, gutter guards can normally be kept in place all year. Examine your gutters after a storm; overflowing water and debris buildup are warning signs. Your roof type is also an important consideration. Steep roofs remove debris more quickly, whereas flatter roofs allow waste to accumulate, increasing the danger of clogging. If ice dams form where you live during the winter, guards may help or hinder depending on their design; look for types designed for cold climates.
