Harriet
from Gunsmoke: Old West Stories
Originally Aired: January 29, 1961 Gunsmoke #460, "Harriet," a young woman named Harriet Horn stumbles into Dodge City after walking forty miles across the prairie, claiming her wagon horses ran off during the night. Marshal Matt Dillon immediately suspects she's hiding something, and his instincts prove correct when the truth emerges: Harriet witnessed two drifters, Dan Scorp and Webb Hoogler, murder her father during a robbery attempt. Now she's in Dodge with a deadly purpose of her own. Refusing to cooperate with Matt's offer of justice through a trial, Harriet takes a job at the Long Branch Saloon and begins manipulating her father's killers, playing one against the other in a dangerous game designed to provoke them into a fatal confrontation. Chester is bewildered watching the seemingly refined young woman cozy up to these brutal men, while Matt confronts Harriet about her vengeful scheme. She remains defiant, insisting these men belong to her, not the law, and that she'll be their executioner regardless of what the Marshal does.
