Step onto the crowded streets of Borough Park, Jerusalem’s Mea Shearim, or London’s Stamford Hill and you see it: Hasidic Judaism is not a relic, but a living, growing tradition. It is a world of bustling families, vibrant synagogues, and dynastic courts that connect the past to the present.In the early twenty-first century, Hasidic communities number in the hundreds of thousands—perhaps even more than a million worldwide, depending on how you count. They cluster in neighborhoods like Borough Park, Williamsburg, Crown Heights, Monsey, Kiryas Joel, Mea Shearim, Geula, Bnei Brak, and Stamford Hill. There are also communities in Antwerp, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo. These concentrations reflect waves of migration, the trauma of the Holocaust, and the postwar rebuilding of Hasidic life.
