Hat tricks power BC, BU to Hockey East wins; ECAC women's race stays tight - CHS 1-31-25

No. 2 Michigan State earned a weekend split with No. 11 Ohio State after a 4-1 win, highlighted by Isaac Howard’s 21st goal of the season. No. 3 Western Michigan took care of business in Colorado Springs, defeating Colorado College 4-1 behind goals from Owen Michaels and Alex Bump. No. 4 Minnesota strengthened its hold on second place in the Big Ten with a 5-2 win over No. 17 Wisconsin, as Jimmy Snuggerud and Brodie Ziemer both scored twice, giving Jimmy Snipes 20 goals on the season. Taylor Makar’s two-goal night helped No. 6 Maine secure a 3-1 victory over Northeastern. Omaha stayed tied for second in the NCHC with Arizona State after taking the extra point in the shootout following a 3-3 tie at No. 5 Denver. In Hockey East, No. 9 UConn also claimed an extra point in the shootout, topping No. 7 Providence after a 3-3 draw, with Ryan Tattle scoring twice in regulation. Quinn Hutson recorded a hat trick to lead No. 10 Boston University to a dominant 7-2 win over No. 18 New Hampshire. Penn State crowded that pairwise bubble with a 5-4 win at No. 13 Michigan, with “The Scorpion” J.J. Wiebusch netting the game-winner with just over five minutes left at Yost. Ryan Kirwan scored twice to bring his season total to 18 as No. 12 Arizona State rolled past Miami 7-1. In ECAC action, No. 14 Quinnipiac needed overtime to defeat Dartmouth 5-4, St. Lawrence edged Cornell 2-1, Colgate shut out Clarkson 2-0, Princeton topped Harvard 4-3 in overtime, and Union took a shootout win after tying Yale 3-3. The CCHA saw St. Thomas upset No. 15 Minnesota State 3-2, No. 19 Augustana took down Lake Superior State 6-3, Bowling Green edged Northern Michigan 3-2 in overtime, and Ferris State handled Bemidji State 5-1. No. 16 North Dakota earned a shootout win over St. Cloud State after a 3-3 tie. In Hockey East, No. 20 UMass doubled up Merrimack 4-2. In Atlantic Hockey America, Mercyhurst topped Robert Morris 4-2, RIT beat Air Force 3-1, and Sacred Heart topped Niagara 3-2. In The Governor’s Cup, Bruce Cech had a belated happy birthday as Alaska beat Alaska-Anchorage 3-1. Elsewhere, LIU beat Stonehill 4-2 in non-conference action, and Lindenwood handled Simon Fraser (B.C.) 5-1 in an exhibition. On Thursday, Ohio State beat Michigan State 4-2, because Gunnarwolfe Fontaine. Guaranteed mention.On the women’s side on Friday, top-ranked Wisconsin slipped past No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth 2-1 in overtime, with Kirsten Simms netting her 15th of the season to lift the Badgers to victory. No. 3 Minnesota jumped into sole possession of second place in the WCHA, defeating second-ranked Ohio State 3-1 behind a two-goal performance from Ella Huber. The ECAC race is still wild as No. 4 Colgate topped No. 9 Clarkson 2-1 in overtime, with Kaia Malachino scoring her 17th of the year for the game-winner. No. 5 Cornell dominated No. 7 St. Lawrence 6-0 to take over first place in the ECAC by half a point over Colgate. No. 8 Penn State extended its winning streak to 11 with a 5-0 victory over Robert Morris, fueled by two goals from Katelyn Roberts and Tessa Janecke’s 19th of the year. Maya Labad’s 13th goal of the season helped No. 10 Quinnipiac secure a 2-1 win over Harvard. No. 11 St. Cloud State put up five goals for the first time since September 22 in a 5-2 win over St. Thomas, with Sofianna Sundelin scoring twice. They’ll meet again on Saturday in Mendota Heights. Boston U. remained tied for first in Hockey East after a 3-2 win over No. 12 Boston College, with Riley Walsh netting the game-winner with under 10 minutes left.
