HAVE ORDINARY SOUTH AFRICANS LOST THE SENSE WHAT IS CORRUPT AND WHAT ISN’T?

from Afternoon Talk · host SAfm

Professor Somadoda Fikeni - Political analyst Guest: David Lewis - Executive Director at Corruption Watch When offenders are caught, the malfunctioning of the judiciary (the slowness of the investigations and the low rate of condemnation) doesn’t allow for effective combating of corruption. Only a few officials have ever been convicted and four out of the five condemned officials have kept their positions after conviction. This situation creates a climate of impunity that poisoned the country and destroys the link between citizens and the government. This led members of the civil society to join forces to create the organisation, Corruption Watch in order to fight the issue.Corruption WatchCorruption Watch is an NPO that was launched in January 2012. It relies on the public to report corruption and uses these reports as a major ‘source of information to fight corruption and hold leaders accountable for their actions,’ as stated on their website. Reporting platforms for Corruption Watch include a website, an SMS line, social media pages, an email account and a postal address to make sure that ‘anyone can safely share what they experience and observe and can speak out against corruption’.
