In the Spotlight - DENNIS GEORGE – SECRETARY GENERAL OF FEDUSA
Dennis George is the General Secretary of the Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA). He started his involvement in the labour movement as an organiser for the Transnet Allied Trade Union (TATU) in 1991 and went on to become the Assistant General Secretary of the Technical Workers Union (TWU). He was the Chairperson of the National Board for Further Education and Training until 2010, board member of the South African Qualifications Authority from 1998 and served for two terms of office until 2004, member of the Tourism Empowerment Council of South Africa for 3 years, member of the National Skills Authority since April 2000 and appointed to serve on the Human Resource Development Council of South Africa since 2010. As General Secretary of FEDUSA, he is now actively involved in NEDLAC and the MLC to influence fiscal, monetary, trade, economic development and labour market policy through social dialogue in conjunction with business and government.

In the Spotlight - CHRIS MAROLENG, NEWLY APPOINTED CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER (COO) of SABC
Chris Maroleng was appointed chief operations officer (COO) of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) on Tuesday.The SABC board announced in a statement that Maroleng would start steering the embattled state broadcaster from Thursday.Maroleng takes over from Hlaudi Motsoeneng, who was fired by the SABC in June 2017, after it was found that he brought the company into disrepute and caused it irreparable damage.An internal disciplinary committee found that Motsoeneng had lied about his qualifications, had purged the SABC of staff, and promoted people and raised salaries without following the correct procedures.

Legalising dagga creates a minefield in the workplace
GUEST (STUDIO): Dr. Richard Malkin - MD of Workforce Healthcare South Africa seems to be following the trend in the United States to legalise cannabis. Last year, Judge Dennis Davis ruled in a full bench decision of the Western Cape High Court, that the use and cultivation of cannabis by an adult in a private home is constitutionally legal. While this decision needs to be confirmed by the Constitutional Court before taking effect, it does cast a spotlight on the adequacy of company policies regarding the use of legal and illegal substances including dagga in the workplace.

Salamina Mosese (née Mphelo) is a South African actress, model and television presenter best known for taking over the role of drama lecturer Keketso Chaka from Katlego Danke on the e.tv soapie Backstage, from April 2006 to June 2007.Born in Zebediela, a small village in Limpopo, Salamina got into acting by accident when she took her brother for an audition. She was asked to audition and landed a part.She received a Matric Exemption with distinctions in English, Afrikaans and History and later studied Corporate Communications at the University of Johannesburg (RAU).She was a presenter for e.tv's kids' programming block CRAZe for five years, and also acted on the SABC1 youth drama series Soul Buddyz, from 1999-2002. In 2008 she won a Top Billing presenter search and began presenting the show in the same year.

Black people were not even considered important to get an education. To be the best where I come from, you have to keep on studying, keep on improving yourself.My role model is my mother. My mother raised five girls, She put all five of us through private school because she was determined to get the best education South Africa could give for us. My mother taught me to be assertive. I am who I am because of her. My mother taught me about the value of education and what I would get if I went all the way with it.

NEWLY APPOINTED CHIEF DIGITAL OFFICER OF SASOL – PRIOR WAS THE CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER OF SASOL AND WINNER OF THE VISIONARY CIO OF THE YEAR AWARD 2017Alec Joannou was born in Johannesburg and attended Wits University where he completed his BSc with majors in Archaeology and Computer Science. Alec joined Price Waterhouse’s consulting division – later to become PwC Consulting – and decided to specialise on a relatively unknown system at the time called SAP. He quickly rose up the ranks of PwC being promoted from consultant to senior consultant and associate director. In 2002 at age 33 Alec was appointed as a Partner to head up the SAP practice for PwC across the African, Middle East and Turkey. At the time Alec was the youngest person to be appointed as a Partner at PwC. With the Enron crises PwC Consulting was sold to IBM where Alec became an Executive.

Owner of Culinary Capers, which started as an ordinary cooking school in 2004 offering classes in many innovative cuisines, she ventured into the culinary health & wellness scene only in 2012, after she brought her own weight down by following a regime of clean eating comprising mainly of whole food & whole grains. Her “Healthy Cooking & Living” classes, which became very popular in 2013 and 2014, are both true reflections of her firm beliefs that to be healthy, we must eat natural, whole and unprocessed foods as well as avoid the use of any artificial colourings, flavourings, additives or preservatives. Her penchant for clean and holistic living also started her foray into yoga and daily meditation, starting her journey towards uncovering her true self, whilst letting go of the many limiting beliefs she had about herself and her fears of starting a new business.

Boikanyo the Dion Herson Foundation's first project was a 1000m sq vegetable garden which was established at Sediba Thuto High Primary School in Mapetla Extension. Five years later the vegetable garden has been handed over to the community to run, a huge success. The project afforded access and opportunities to interact and engage with residents in the area and we got insight into the multi-factorial challenges facing children and teenagers growing up in such dire poverty. The children (and caregivers) whom we assist generally live in child/grandmother and sick mother headed households.

Tashi: It's your first TV role and it's such a notable one. What's it been like?Pearl: Extremely overwhelming. You know, when I started and I was told about the wedding and all of that, it just completely overwhelmed me. It took me a while to warm up to the entire idea that this is me being on such a big soapie. Everything is just coming in bits and pieces and the wedding was so big so that was also overwhelment on top of overwhelment. Born in Port Elizabeth in 1986, Laduma Ngxokolo had his first hands-on experience of textile designing in 2003 when he studied at Lawson Brown High School. Ngxokolo’s flair for knitwear design earned him a bursary from both Port Elizabeth-based Cape Wools South Africa and Mohair South Africa during his Btech studies at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2010. The same year Ngxokolo won the South African national leg of the South African Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) Design Competition, which earned him a trip to London where he was awarded first prize internationally for the competition. The title of his competition entry was “The Colourful World of the Xhosa Culture” that consisted of men’s knitwear that is inspired by traditional Xhosa beadwork.
